| TALENA SANDERS | Nov 26, 2006 |
Talena Sanders is an interdisciplinary artist who uses a wide range of media including film photography, digital video, live digital video mixing, moving image film, installation, archival work, social practice work, performance, curatorial projects, and independent publications to explore the extraordinary ways humans express individual and collective identities. Her work investigates how we translate our interior lives and desires in communication with other people through visual cues. Talena utilizes the unassuming vocabulary of the automatic film camera to create intimate, candid examinations of individuals’ processes of self-discovery and outward expressions of lifestyle through their relationships with their professions, material possessions, immediate and mundane environments, and their choices in personal appearance. Often through collaborative process she documents the ways in which people rely on their visual expressions of identity to connect with one another and explore what it means to belong to a collective cultural identity. Through documenting experiences in international travel, Talena discovers how the expression of individualism relates to broader cultural and global influences, and how the wide availability of visual culture information through various new media outlets is affecting social norms of personal expression. She continues to be fascinated by the motivations behind those who choose to test societal norms through eccentric lifestyles and personal appearance, including documentation of her own personal experiences to investigate this phenomena.
